Emma Jean (Semelsberger) Gates

Emma Jean (Semelsberger) Gates, 90, Hollidaysburg, passed away Friday at UPMC Altoona.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, daughter of the late Joseph and Tress (Gates) Semelsberger. She married Wade A. Gates, who preceded her in death in 2007.

Surviving are a daughter, Gloria J.; and a son, Gary W., both of Hollidaysburg.

Emma graduated from Reade Township High School, then graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was a teacher for 35 years, teaching at Reade Township High School, Beccaria-Coalport-Irvona High School, and retiring from Altoona Area High School.

Emma was a member of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association and Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, a charter member of the Daughters of the Nile; and a past treasurer of Delphi Chapter 65, Order of the Eastern Star.

Emma was a former member of Beaver Valley United Methodist Church and a current member of First United Methodist Church of Hollidaysburg.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, at the church, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Beaver Valley Cemetery.
