Leona M. (Smith) Harker

Leona M. Harker, 81, Newry, died Thursday evening, February 22, 2018, surrounded by her family and friends in Hollidaysburg.

She was born December 30, 1936, in Newry, daughter of the late Cloid and Laura (Yingling) Smith. On November 9, 1957, she married Bernard E. Harker in St. Patrick's Catholic Church rectory by Father Raymond Cuppies.

Surviving are her husband, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage; twin daughters: Pamela Marie Gearhart and husband, Mark, of Duncansville, and Patricia Ann Goffart and husband, Walter C., of Roaring Spring; two sons: Nathan L. and wife, Cindy, of Duncansville and Brett A. of East Freedom; nine grandchildren: Curtis, Steven, Cody, Joshua, Amy, Lindsay, Shelley, Nicole and Jessica; four great-grandchildren: Luca, Rocco, Lilly and Harper; three sisters: Marietta Martz, Marlene Smith and Lenora Shaw; a brother, Dale and wife, Arlette; and Bobbi Jo Campbell, who was raised by Leona and Bernard.

She was preceded in death by two brothers: Cloid Jr. and Dennis.

Leona was a graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, Class of 1955, and she was a homemaker and worked two years for Capitol Press in Duncansville.

She was a member of Newry Lutheran Church, and served for many years on the Newry Election Board.

She was known for her apple pie and raisin-filled cookies, and she enjoyed going to auctions.

Friends will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2018, at Newry Lutheran Church, Pastor John Tellyea officiating. Interment will be at New St. Mary Cemetery, Hollidaysburg.
