Oliver Andrew, MD Obituary

Oliver Terry Andrew, M.D. was born in Hollidaysburg in 1939, the son of the late Dr. Oliver F. Andrew and Leona Treese Andrew.  He married Kristina Sheehan on August 1, 1987 in the backyard of their home.

Surviving are his wife Kristina and three daughters:  Koelle Williams and husband Greg of Hollidaysburg, Meghan Andrew and husband Patrick Linder of Seattle, Washington and Megan Anderson and husband Dustin Lange of Cranberry Twp., PA.  He has four grandchildren whom he loved dearly:  Jacob Orr and Andrew Williams of Hollidaysburg and Ella Lange and Brynn Lange of Cranberry Twp.  They are a constant source of note-worthy events.

He is survived by his best friend and brother, Dr. Allan T. Andrew and wife, Linda of Bridgeville, PA and their children and grandchildren.

He leaves behind four dear friends in California:  Dr. Hamoudi and Susan Al Bander, Dr. Anthony Sebastian and Dr. Patricia Schoenfield.

Dr. Andrew graduated from Hollidaysburg High School, class of 1957 and Franklin and Marshall College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society in 1961.  In 1965 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he was chosen as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

He served an Internal Medicine Internship and three years of Internal Medicine Residency in the hospitals of the University of California San Francisco.  Subsequently he completed a 2-year Renal Fellowship at San Francisco General Hospital.

From July 1967 to July 1969, midway through his house staff training, he served two years as a physician in the United States Navy.  From August 1967 to August 1968, he was assigned to the 3rd Medical Battalion of the 3rd Marine Division and was stationed at Phu Bai and Dong Ha Run initially.  He then served with the 4th Marine Regiment stationed at Camp Carroll and LZ Vandergrift in VietNam.  He completed his Naval service at Newport Rhode Island Navy Hospital.

In California, he was employed as a physician at the Mexican-American Community Health Center in Alviso and as an Instructor in the medical clinics at the University of California San Francisco, where he assisted medical, nursing, and pharmacy students in gaining medical skills.  He served one year as an instructor in Nephrology at the University of California Renal Center at San Francisco General.

From 1979 to 1983 he practiced medicine in Yuba City, California

He then returned to Hollidaysburg and was employed as a staff physician at VanZandt Veteran’s Administration Medical Center until his retirement in 2007.

He loved his family and enjoyed the times shared with them although they always made fun of him for wearing wool socks to the beach.  He enjoyed traveling with his wife and they made several memorable trips together especially to Main and Cape Cod.  He was fond of all animals and a pet was always part of the household.  He had a special place in his heart for cats Molly and Leo.  The children had a talent for bringing sick or stray animals home.

He enjoyed feeding and watching birds, gardening and growing flowers, especially roses; eating out; cooking, and most especially going to the family cabin on Pickerel River, Ontario with family and fishing buddies.  He was an avid fan of the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers and will be sorry to miss another World Series appearance by the Pirates.

He was previously a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg.

Friends will be received from 9 am to 1 pm Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg immediately followed by a 1 pm funeral service by Rev. James K.
