Richard L. Butler
March 16, 1926 ~ August 31, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years OldRichard L. Butler, 91, Martinsburg, formerly of all over the United States, passed away peacefully on Thursday at Pennknoll Village, Everett.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Thomas and Roseanna (Miller) Butler. In 1954, he married Elizabeth M. Schmidt in Las Vegas, Nev.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years; a niece; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Marjorie White in 1998 and Virginia Wineland in 2002; and a brother, T. Paul in 1971.
Richard was a 1944 graduate of Roaring Spring High School, and he retired from the tech photo services branch of the Aeronautical Systems Division after 33 years of service.
Richard proudly retired from the U.S. Air Force and then the U.S. Army, after serving from 1943-53, in Korea and in the Philippines with the 6204th Photo Mapping Squadron. In 1960, he served on a three-man photo crew of the C-130 Hercules in Antarctica. He was a member of W-P AFB Quarter Century Club and the recipient of various achievement awards.
Richard was active in various Methodist churches where he resided, especially Lakemont and Woodbury. Most recently, he was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Martinsburg. He was an avid blood donor, giving 94 pints before his health prevented donations.
Friends will be received from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 7, 2017, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, where a memorial service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
