Evelyn Virginia (Free) Socey

Evelyn Virginia Socey, 95, formerly of Lakemont, died Friday, May 18, 2018, at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.

She was born August 31, 1922, in Lakemont, daughter of the late Ira Maxwell and Margaretta (Hoffman) Free. She married Charles Robert Socey on July 31, 1943, at The Lakemont Church of God, and he preceded her in death on February 2, 1999, after sharing 55 years of marriage.

Surviving are two sons: Ronald E. and wife, Gayle, of Altoona, and Charles W. and wife, Barbara, of Lakemont; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was a graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, Class of 1942. She was a member of the Lakemont Church of God and a member of the Horseshoe Curve Chapter of Verizon Telephone. She was a volunteer at Altoona Hospital with 21,000 hours, where she made hats for the newborns.

She enjoyed flea markets, knitting and crocheting, and gardening.

At the family’s request, a private viewing and funeral service will be held at Sorge Funeral Home, Inc., Hollidaysburg, the Reverend Mark A. Rhodes officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
