Harold R. "Sonny" Neely, 89, of Altoona, died Wednesday at UPMC Altoona. He was born at home in Hollidaysburg, son of the late Harold M. and Dessa (Garman) Neely. He married Jean A. Clark in 1951.
Surviving are: his loving wife of 68 years; children: Pat Clark and wife Eleanor, Connie Conroy, Barbara Helsel, Cheryl Saltsgiver and husband Jim, and Sharon Merritts and husband Tim; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Margaret Oakes, Carol Caldwell, Joann Hileman, Betty Butler and Patty Woomer; brothers: Robert and Donald; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.
Sonny graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1948. He served from 1948 to 1952 in the U.S. Army in the Atomic Energy Commission. He retired from PennDOT, and then opened Neely's Gun and Tackle Shop.
He was a life member and former president of the Blair County Game, Fish, and Forestry Association, and was a former instructor of Hunter Trapper Education.
Sonny enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and camping with his wife and family.
Friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at Sorge Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., where a funeral service with military honors will immediately follow at 5 p.m. Interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery.
