Bernice J. Shambaugh Hargis

Bernice J. (Helsel) Shambaugh Hargis, 90, of Roaring Spring, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday.  She was born in Roaring Spring, daughter of the late Ira and Blanche (Thomas) Helsel.  She first married William E. Shambaugh in 1949, he preceded her in death in 1987.  She then married Glen O. Hargis in 2002, who preceded her in death in 2014.

Surviving are daughters: Roberta Nestor and husband, Eddy, in VA, Niecie Mock in MN, Brenda Garver and husband Ed in Maple Hollow, and Beth Ann Searle and husband, Rev. Dan, in Canada; sons: Barry Shambaugh and wife, Debbie, of Duncansville, and Brinley Shambaugh in FL; 21 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Naomi Helsel in FL; many nieces and nephews; and her many friends from Sun Coast Baptist Church in FL.  Bernice was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.

She was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School and was active in the Christian Women’s Club and AWANAS.  Bernice was also active in the music program at Foot of Ten Independent Baptist Church, Reservoir Bible Church, and the Sun Coast Baptist Church, where she played the piano and volunteered for many activities.

She enjoyed dressing up as a clown and visiting nursing homes to bring joy to all.  She blessed many through her Card Ministry and beautiful afghans.  The family would like to thank the many caregivers at Garvey Manor, where she will be remembered by her beautiful smile that would light up a room.

Friends will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, September 11, 2020 at Sorge Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Hollidaysburg, and from 9:00 to 10:00 am Saturday, at Smith Corner Church, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 10:00 am.  Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring.
