On Monday, September 13, 2021, Charles R Hammond Jr, loving husband and father of three daughters, passed away at the age of 73.
Chuck was born on February 26, 1948 in Altoona, PA to the late Charles and Marie (Gallagher) Hammond. On May 6, 1972, he married his soulmate Cora Maude Austin
Chuck served in the US Army Security Agency branch of the US Army during Vietnam, and retired from James E. Van Zandt as a cook. He pitched for the 13th Ward and still holds the record for the most strikeouts in a single game. He was a long-standing member of the Riggles Gap Sportsman Club.
Chuck had a deep passion for cooking and fishing, and loved tying trout flies. His trout flies were seen by many fellow fly fisherman as genuine works of art. He was known for his heart-warming smile and kind spirit, as well as his ability to make everyone feel welcomed and loved.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife Cora of 49 years and his beloved and faithful dog, Zoie; 3 daughters: Corinna and husband (Corey), Jennifer and husband (Mike), and favorite daughter Sarah with her four fur babies; eight grandchildren: Craig, Charles, Alys, Breon, Jay, Jessika, Shawna, and Donielle; four great-grandchildren: Charlie, Sara, Luna, and Bexley; two brothers, two sisters, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held for immediate family members – Please contact the family for more information.
At Chuck’s request, he asks that friends enjoy a peaceful nature walk along a favorite river, with a trusty fishing pole in hand, to best remember him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chuck’s memory to the Blair County Game, Fish and Forestry Association: www.blairgame.com/donations
The family is especially grateful to Dr. Bit-Shawish and the entire staff at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.
