Donald Wible Obituary

Donald R. Wible, 91, was born on April 5, 1930. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on January 17, 2022. He was born in Thompsontown, son of the late Rev. Lewis D. and Mary (Snyder) Wible. He married D. Jean Hurley, who preceded him in death in 2012 after 61 years of marriage.

Surviving are two daughters: Donna Jean Cruse and husband Drew of Hollidaysburg, and Melissa L. Wible of Mt. Union; two sons: Rev. Steven M. and wife Juniata of Florida, and Dr. David S. and wife Ying-Ying of Taiwan; 8 grandchildren: Jessica, Joanna (David), Janelle (Bura), Julia (Matt), Adam (Jen), Abby (Dave) Jonathan (Kerri Ann), and Ana; and 12 great-grandchildren: Levi, Violet, Lucy, Felicity, Jude, Wyatt, Abigail, Isabella, Naomi, Isaiah, Jacob, and Evangeline; a sister, Ruth Smith of Johnstown, and a brother, Wayne of California.

Don was preceded in death by siblings: Lloyd, Gerald, Glenn, Naomi, Clyde, Lewis, Blaine, Kenneth, Samuel, and Ronald.

He graduated from Altoona High School in 1948, where he lettered in both basketball and baseball, and sang in the Senior Octet. Don played second base for the 11th Ward team in 1949 when the team won the inaugural year championship of the George Kelly Federation. He then attended training camps with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Cleveland Indians, but decided not to pursue a career in Major League Baseball so that he could keep the Sabbath Day holy. He retired from Ward Trucking after a 42-year career as a local driver. Don was a member of Westminster Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Hollidaysburg. He served for many years as a choir director and church elder. His gift for and his infectious love of singing enriched the lives of generations. His deep faith permeated every aspect of his life, touching all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He unfailingly showed not only the love of his life, Jean, but also each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren what it means to truly be loved.

Friends will be received from 11:00 am-1:00 pm on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Westminster Orthodox Presbyterian Church, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 pm.  Reverend Chad Mullinix officiating.  Interment at Blair Memorial Park.
