John “Jack” Emerson Matthews V, 86, was born August 26,1937 in Bronxville, NY and lived a short time in Bronxville NY, then Fairborn, OH but was raised primarily in Queens County, NYC (Whitestone & Beechurst). He attended NYC Public Schools and graduated from Bayside High School then graduated from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering. Jack lived in Williamsport, Lycoming County, PA for 19 years and then moved to Roaring Spring, Blair County, PA where he resided until his passing.
Jack is survived by his wife of 38 years, Karen Sue Matthews of Roaring Spring, PA. He is also survived by five living children: daughter Deborah Ann Imber, of Somers Point, NJ; son John Emerson Matthews VI (Brad Rogers) of Saint Augustine, FL; daughter Jennifer Lynn (Bob) Hudson of Saint Augustine, FL; daughter Melinda Dyan (John) Anderson of Hollidaysburg, PA and stepdaughter Amanda Elizabeth Matthews of Sanford, NC whom he raised. One child, daughter Deirdre Elizabeth Longo preceded him in death.
Jack will be sadly missed by his eight grandchildren, Brooke Imber, Tyler Imber, Robert Longo, Melanie Longo, Meaghan McEldowney, Nicholas Hudson, Alexandra Hudson and RJ McEldowney (listed in order of age) as well as one sister, Diane (Jamie) Garofalo of Saint Augustine, FL; a brother, Robert Newman of Fort Lauderdale FL; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jack completed the Officers Basic Course at Fort Bliss, TX Air Defense School. After active duty he served ten years in the US Army Reserve and was Honorably Discharged Capt-Engr. Jack was a Licensed Professional Engineer and retired (January 1995) as District Engineer from the PA Dept. of Transportation after 35 years of service, having served as District Engineer for Southwestern Pennsylvania for 16 years. Jack was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, canoeing and camping. The most important things in life to Jack were his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
At Jack’s request, a private Celebration of Life with immediate family will be held at a future time. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Dreams Go On in Jack’s memory. Donations can be sent in care of Dreams Go On at 1401 Turkey Valley Road, Hollidaysburg PA 16648.
