Mary DeLozier Obituary

Sept 22, 1930 - Oct 12, 2023

Mary Catherine Victoria DeLozier passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her home on Thursday October 12th, 2023.

Mary was born in Harrisburg, PA., the eldest of four children born to Nicholas and Mary (Serbieff)

Mary graduated third in her class from Bishop McDevitt High School, class of 1948.

Upon graduation Mary worked for two years as a bookkeeper for a local ice cream firm.

In early 1951 accepted a position as a stenographer for the P.R.R. in Enola, PA., recording via shorthand, court proceedings related to accidents that had occurred on the railroad.

Mary’s father Nicholas had immigrated to America from a section of Hungary, today known as Timisoara, Romania. He arrived at Ellis Island on June 26, 1927, and would come to reside in Harrisburg, PA.

His close friend from Hungary, Peter would also cross the Atlantic and take residence in Duncansville, PA. The families would often visit one another. Upon hearing of an upcoming visit, Peter’s daughter asked if Mary might come along. If so, she would arrange for a blind date for Mary with a handsome chap down on Third Avenue, Gordy DeLozier. Gordy would often tell the story that when he saw Mary get out of the car that nigh the said, “I hope THAT one is MY date.”

It was indeed and the rest would become history.

Mary would be united in marriage to Gordon Lee DeLozier of Duncansville PA. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on May 14, 1955. Gordon preceded Mary in death, passing away on April 13,2016 after 62 years of marriage.

Mary was a homemaker and providing for and caring for Gordon and her five sons was paramount.

To this day, and much to her delight, her sons are often referred to as “The DeLozier Boys.”

For many years while raising her family Mary would serve as secretary for what would soon become Gordon L. DeLozier, Inc.

Mary will long be remembered by those who loved her for her intellect, calm empathy and above all her natural grace.

She is survived by a sister, Patricia Baker of Wernersville, Pa., and a brother Nicholas Jr. (Nancy) Horvath of Harrisburg, Pa. Also surviving are four sons, Douglas (Denise) of Lafayette, Co., Mark (Jo Anne), Matthew (Kris), Stephen (Melody) all of Hollidaysburg, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister Anne Gustin of Harrisburg and a son Philip (Lugene) of Hollidaysburg.

The family would like to thank those who aided in Mary’s care, as well as a special niece Lorraine and Mary’s close friend Jane.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers the family would ask that donations be made to a local charity of their choice.

There will be a catholic mass and a celebration of life later.
