Arnold I. Hewitt, 91, a lifetime resident of Lakemont, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

He was born February 10, 1925, in Altoona, son of the late Ira W. and Emma M. (Trueman) Hewitt. In 1952, he married Eleanor L. Johnsonbaugh in Altoona.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years; a daughter, Amy Miller and husband, Frances, of Hollidaysburg; three sons: Jeffrey and wife, Carol, of Hollidaysburg, Ernest and wife, Debbie, of Altoona, and John Bradley of Patton; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Megan, in 1988.

Arnold attended Hollidaysburg High School and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Ill. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946, serving in WWII onboard the USS Jacques Laramie. He was employed by Sears Roebuck for 40 years as a service man, and then as a maintenance engineer until retiring in 1988.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Altoona, and he enjoyed building things at home, like the buck-mobile, which he invented for deer hunting. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, blueberry picking and hiking in the mountains looking for ginseng, and he used to enjoy roller skating at Sir-Skate. He enjoyed being a former Assistance Scout Master for BSA Troop 99 in Lakemont. Arnie’s greatest pride was the home that he designed and built for his family.

Friends will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, where a funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m., Pastor Drew McCaffery officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Antis Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Bethany Lutheran Church, 200 3rd Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
